| Fresh Produce: When to Choose Organic |
Fresh summer produce – I look forward to it every year! But with all the talk about pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, how do you know if your produce is “clean”? Organic is more expensive – when is it really worth it?
According to the April 2008 Today’s Dietitian journal, the following is a list of Produce’s Dirty Dozen” – those fruits and vegetables highest in pesticide residue (these are the ones that you would most like want to purchase as organic):
Apples, Bell Peppers, Celery, Cherries, Grapes (imported), Lettuce, Nectarines, Peaches, Pears, Potatoes, Spinach and Strawberries
The “Not So Dirty Dozen”, which are lowest in pesticide residue, include:
Asparagus, Avocadoes, Bananas, Broccoli, Cabbage, Kiwi, Mangoes, Onions, Papayas, Pineapple, Sweet Corn (frozen), and Sweet Peas (frozen).
Now you know when to buy organic and when it might not be as necessary – so you can purchase and consume your fresh summer produce without worrying about unwanted pesticides and chemicals. Enjoy!
